We’re Here to Help!

What is the difference between assisted living and senior living communities?

Senior living communities provide a less hands-on level of care for seniors. For the most part, residents of senior living facilities live independent lives.

Assisted living care dedicates itself to helping those that cannot entirely care for themselves. This may be as simple as helping provide them with food or provide taking medicine, and certainly making sure they don’t hurt themselves. It may include assistance with the very basics of living.

When is it time to consider assisted living for my loved one?

Although it is difficult to admit your limitations to care for your loved one, knowing when it’s time to consider assisted living is important. Holding down a full-time job, having a spouse and/ or child in the home, caring for pets, and other daily or weekly responsibilities means you simply may not have enough time to care for your aging family member.

In contrast, memory care facilities are specifically intended to help individuals who have memory and cognitive impairments due to diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s. In a memory care facility, your loved one will get the personalized, customized care that they need to keep them safe, protect their cognitive abilities, and live a comfortable, enjoyable life.

What can I expect to pay for assisted living per year?

Assisted living care costs in Colorado vary and start from as low as $9,000/month. In many cases premiums are charged for Levels Of Care. Be sure you understand what this means prior to committing to the Assisted Living location you choose. These fees can sometimes double the published “room rate.” In our case, with rare exceptions, we charge only and all-inclusive rate.

What payment options are available?

Paying for an assisted living community to look after your elderly loved one can be expensive. There are ways to help to make the costs more bearable. The first step is to look at any insurance options that are available for you. Depending on who is paying for the costs, you or your loved one, you may be able to write some of the costs off on your taxes.

You may be able to split the costs between you and your family members. You may be able to find help from additional relatives as long as they agree.

What should I look for when touring and choosing an assisted living facility?

Do a walk-through before you spend the money to get a loved one into an assisted care community. You owe it to them and to yourself. Take a tour of the assisted living community and what the community has to offer. Meet the people, and see what is going on there. You take the tour and there are a few things you need to pay attention to.

1. Security
2. Socialization
3. Proper Nutrition
4. A Beautiful Place to Live
5. Particulars to Your Loved One

Be sure to ask all the question you may have during the tour, and take the time to see everything you can. Meet the staff and make sure this is a place you would want your loved one live in.

What do I need to prepare to move my loved one into assisted living?
If you decide to move your aging loved one(s) into an assisted care facility, you will need to move them and their belongings into the facility. This is important when you try to make their room feel more like a home and less like the sterile space you are likely to see when you first walk into the room.

It’s important to make your aging loved one feel like they are at home when they’re in their room. Bring personal objects with special meaning for them, as well as utilitarian items that provide them with a source of joy or entertainment.

How do I talk to my loved one about assisted living?
It’s not easy to decide to put a family member in an assisted living community. You may feel like you are failing your family member, or giving up on them because they can no longer take care of themselves. Other concerns include feeling like the decision comes with costs that can’t be met. Whatever the situation, talking about moving into an assisted living facility is a hard conversation to have.

However, sometimes it is a necessity. Caring for an aging family member is not simple for anyone. The costs and needs may be too much for you. Other considerations can also arise that you may not be able to provide. Some elderly family members may need a lot of care. More than you can provide, and some cannot be alone for too long. They may even need to have around-the-clock care.

My Mom has been a resident of The Manor on Marston Lake for almost a year now, and she is thriving in this environment. She has many activities to choose from each day and participates in everything with all of her new friends. She is seldom in her room. Moving my Mom to The Manor was the best decision my family made with regard to her aging needs.
